New Testament Survey of Faith (5)

David Eells - 6/13/17

Believe, Believeth, Belief

A survey is an overview and not in depth but it is helpful to see what a believer is that we are not deceived by religion as they were in the gospels.

"Faith" is translated from the Greek word "Pistis", which is also the Greek word for "Belief" In Romans 10:17: So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. "Pistis" is also the Greek word for "Faith" that is translated "Belief" in 2 Thessalonians 2:13: But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, for that God chose you from the beginning unto salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth. "Pisteuo" is the verb for the same word and translated Believe. So in any New Testament Survey of Faith these should be included.

What faith or belief is was given by Paul in the ASV - Hebrews 11: 1 Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen. Faith or Belief is accepting Godo?=s Word above the things we see or experience in the world. In the KJV - Hebrews 11: 1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. We are believing we have something on the grounds that God said so. Whereas the worldly believe only what they see. With faith which is a condition of receiving we believe we have before we see it. 2 Corinthians 5:7: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

Matthew 27:42: He saved others; himself he cannot save. He is the King of Israel; let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him. (Their faith was based on sight and they were unqualified in our covenant)

Mark 1:15: and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe in the gospel.

Mark 5:35 While he yet spake, they come from the ruler of the synagogueo?=s house saying, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Teacher any further? 36: But Jesus, not heeding the word spoken, saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not, only believe. ... 39 And when he was entered in, he saith unto them, Why make ye a tumult, and weep? the child is not dead, but sleepeth. 40 And they laughed him to scorn. But he, having put them all forth, taketh the father of the child and her mother and them that were with him, and goeth in where the child was. 41 And taking the child by the hand, he saith unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, Arise. 42 And straightway the damsel rose up, and walked; for she was twelve years old. And they were amazed straightway with a great amazement.

Mark 9:21 And he asked his father, How long time is it since this hath come unto him? And he said, From a child. 22 And oft-times it hath cast him both into the fire and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us, and help us. 23: And Jesus said unto him, If thou canst! All things are possible to him that believeth. 24: Straightway the father of the child cried out, and said, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. 25 And when Jesus saw that a multitude came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I command thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 26 And having cried out, and torn him much, he came out: and the boy became as one dead; insomuch that the more part said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and raised him up; and he arose.

Mark 9:42: And whosoever shall cause one of these little ones that believe on me to stumble, it were better for him if a great millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

Mark 11:23: Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou taken up and cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he saith cometh to pass; he shall have it. 24: Therefore I say unto you, All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Mark 13:21: And then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is the Christ; or, Lo, there; believe it not: 22 for there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall show signs and wonders, that they may lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 But take ye heed: behold, I have told you all things beforehand. 24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, 25 and the stars shall be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens shall be shaken. 26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory.

Mark 16:16: He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned. 17: And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall in no wise hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Luke 8:12: And those by the way side are they that have heard; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. 13: And those on the rock are they who, when they have heard, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And that which fell among the thorns, these are they that have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 And that in the good ground, these are such as in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Luke 7:30: But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected for themselves the counsel of God, being not baptized of him. ... 20: 4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? 5 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him? 6 But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet. 7 And they answered, that they knew not whence it was. 22:67: If thou art the Christ, tell us. But he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: (Pam received for us today: Hosea 12: 10 I have also spoken unto the prophets, and I have multiplied visions; and by the ministry of the prophets have I used similitudes.)

Luke 24:25: And he said unto them, O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! John 1:7: The same came for witness, that he might bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him. 1:12: But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name:

John 3:12: If I told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;

15: that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life. 16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him. 18: He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God. 3:36: He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 4:19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21: Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father. 22 Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in spirit and truth. 25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. ... 42: and they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy speaking: for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.

John 4:48: Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe.

John 5:24: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life. ... 38: And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not. ... 44: How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that cometh from the only God ye seek not? ... 46: For if ye believed Moses, ye would believe me; for he wrote of me. 47: But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

John 6:29: Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. 30: They said therefore unto him, What then doest thou for a sign, that we may see, and believe thee? what workest thou? ... 35: Jesus said unto them. I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. 36: But I said unto you, that ye have seen me, and yet believe not. ... 40: For this is the will of my Father, that every one that beholdeth the Son, and believeth on him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. ... 47: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth hath eternal life. ... 64: But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him. ... 7:5: For even his brethren did not believe on him.
