The Body and Service We’ve been studying what it means to be our brother’s keeper and I would like to continue with that. To the Church of Ephesus: (Rev.2:4) But I have this against thee, that thou didst leave thy first love. I believe a lot of the church left their first love. In the beginning, when we come into the kingdom, a lot of people are very enthusiastic about Jesus but before long a lot of people settle down and lose their first love. (5) Remember therefore whence thou art fallen, and repent and do the first works; or else I come to thee, and will move thy candlestick out of its place, except thou repent. This is can be something said to the Laodicean church of our age: go back and do the first works. Go back and find out what the Bible says and forget the lies that you have heard; seek the truth for yourself. (6) But this thou hast, that thou hatest the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. These people, who were evidently lukewarm and falling away from the Lord, had one thing positive: they hated the work of the Nicolaitans, which God also hates. Somebody that was in bad shape, as they were, had something positive about them. God hates the work of the Nicolaitans. ‘Nico’ means ‘to conquer’ and ‘laitan’ means ‘the people’; ‘to conquer the people.’ It was a priestly order that set themselves up above the people of God between the people and God. In the Old Testament, there was a priestly order, the Levites and High Priests, which ministered to God for the people. This was fine for the letter and the law when people were not born again in order to have a perfect relationship with God. It’s not accepted anymore. Right after the New Testament started there was a great falling away. Catholicism started a priestly order which is not according to God’s will, and the Protestants kept this up, but they called them pastors instead of priests.
